Salary: Range between $69,660 -124,488 on a salary schedule based on education and years of experience.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES – ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Instructional Practice & Student Development

• Develop and submit annual, unit, and daily lesson plans that are responsive to the individual needs of students.

• Set high expectations for student development and ensure all students develop grade-level proficiency to prepare for success in college.

• Design a comprehensive program to support academic, social, emotional, spiritual, physical, moral, and character development of every student. Promote student development of the whole person and helping students understand and live the Ignatian teaching of Cura Personalis

• Utilize technology to engage students’ learning.

Leadership and Collaboration

All teachers are expected to participate in the following:

• Help students to navigate their developmental journey during their time at Cristo Rey as a homeroom teacher.

• Moderate student clubs and activities or coach athletic teams.

• Chaperone/lead field trips, immersion experiences, retreats, Christian Service opportunities, and other activities.

• Participate in regular supervisory duties.

• Participate in required substitution responsibilities at least 4 times per semester.

• Understand and appreciate the developmental and educational benefits of the school’s Corporate

Work Study Program

• Develop relationships with and meet the individual needs of each student consistent with the school’s belief in cura personalis, or “care for the whole individual.”

• Participate in grade-level meetings to coordinate curriculum across the content area and better address student needs.

• Communicate regularly with families via email or call to discuss progress and develop a supportive home-school relationship.

• Offer office hours after school 2 days per week.

• Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal or Supervisor.

Organization-wide Learning & Development

• Utilize available resources from colleagues and external sources to continually reflect on and improve your teaching.

• Participate in professional learning community protocols and instructional coaching, collaborating with colleagues to analyze student work and teaching practice. Serve as a catalyst for improvement in your own classroom and school wide.

• Participate in the school’s Adult Faith Formation program, committing to living and supporting the Catholic, Jesuit mission of the school through continuous spiritual and personal growth and by serving as a leader of faith, service, and justice for our students.

• Actively engage in identity work and necessary conversations to create a culture that is inclusive.

PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor’s degree with relevant major, and have a current, valid Washington teaching credential or master’s degree in the relevant academic field of instruction, or be working to obtain the required credential or master’s in the academic field of instruction, and/or professional experience.

• Fluent Spanish speaker with ability to each students to the language, heritage students, and advanced speakers.

Advocating for World Languages in Oregon

Overview of Recent Federal Funding

Congress recently passed a federal education funding package that maintains overall funding levels for major K–12 programs. While the bill does not significantly increase education spending, it preserves key funding streams that support multilingual learners, language teachers, and bilingual education initiatives.

Title II: Professional Development for Language Teachers

Title II funding for educator professional development was also preserved. Many districts use these funds to provide training in second language acquisition, biliteracy development, culturally responsive instruction, and dual language program design. Continued Title II support helps strengthen instructional quality and teacher retention.

Title III: Support for Multilingual Learners

Title III funding, which supports English learners and language acquisition programs, remains largely level-funded. These funds are commonly used by districts to support bilingual teachers, instructional materials, assessment tools, family engagement, and supplemental services. Dual language and bilingual programs often rely on Title III resources to strengthen program quality and ensure equitable access for multilingual students.

Stability for Dual Language and Bilingual Programs

By maintaining Title III and related funding, Congress avoided major cuts that could have disrupted dual language and bilingual programs. This stability allows districts to continue staffing programs, maintaining instructional supports, and planning multi-year initiatives. It also helps protect existing positions for bilingual educators and language specialists.

WLARA Funding Increase

WLARA funding increased from $10 million to $15 million in FY26, strengthening federal support for world language education. For Oregon, this creates new opportunities to expand programs, improve teacher training, and increase access to high-quality language instruction, especially in less commonly taught languages that support students’ global readiness for DOD support schools.

Higher Ed Funding Preserved

Title VI/Fulbright-Hays funding for FY 2026 was preserved at about prior levels, sustaining essential federal support for higher-education language programs, international research, and study abroad. This funding helps universities strengthen less commonly taught language instruction, support faculty research, and expand global learning opportunities—benefiting students, teacher preparation programs, and institutional language capacity. Continued investment ensures vibrant world language scholarship and prepares graduates for global engagement.

Limitations of Flat Funding

Although funding was preserved, most programs were not expanded. Flat funding means that rising costs and growing student populations continue to strain local budgets. As a result, many districts may struggle to expand dual language programs, raise teacher compensation, or meet increasing demand without additional state or local investment.

Implications for Language Education Advocacy

For language educators and advocates, the recent funding package provides short-term stability but highlights the need for continued advocacy. Sustained federal investment is essential for expanding access to high-quality dual language programs, strengthening teacher pipelines, and supporting biliteracy and multilingualism as national priorities.

Elections to the COFLT Board will be held starting in May. We are accepting nominations through April 30, 2026. To nominate yourself or others, click HERE to fill out the nomination form.

The COFLT Board is comprised of 5 elected and 1 appointed officer, 8 to 12 elected at-large members (representing K-16), as well as representatives from our affiliate language organizations such as the ATJO, ATCO, OATG, PNCFL, etc. We also have representatives from the retired language teacher community. Our board represents all major languages taught in Oregon including Spanish, French, German, Chinese, and Japanese.

COFLT depends on volunteers to make professional development opportunities available in Oregon. Please consider serving on the COFLT board for a two year term.

Camp Abenteuer is a German immersion camp for 8-15 year-olds with any level of German. This year's camp theme is Sport und Kultur (Sports and Culture). Camp Abenteuer is scheduled for July 19th-24th at the historic Menucha Retreat and Conference Center. The registration link will go live on the camp website on March 1st. This spring, the PNCFL Conference is being held in Portland. This in-person event is an exciting opportunity to connect with World Language educators from all over the Pacific Northwest. The PNCFL conference will visit a different member state each year so it may be a few years before it returns to our backyard. We encourage to take advantage of this event and all that it has to offer. Dear COFLT Members:

The New Year is often a time for reflection on the past year while also looking forward to the year to come. 2025 has been a great year for COFLT. We came together for conferences and workshops and we connected with one another both virtually and in-person. As we look forward to 2026, we are excited by the upcoming opportunities to connect and grow. We are especially privileged because this year, the PNCFL conference will be held here in Portland, April 9-11. This will be a great chance to attend workshops and conference sessions with teachers from all over the Pacific Northwest. How can teacher feedback directly influence learners’ language growth? The key to evaluating language and providing impactful feedback is a deep understanding of the performance domains and indicators. After exploring the ACTFL Interpersonal and Presentational language performance indicators at the Novice, Intermediate, and Advanced levels, workshop participants will have the opportunity to evaluate world language learner samples at the middle through high school level. Working together, participants will determine feedback that highlights what learners can do and that nurtures hope, builds efficacy, and promotes growth.

After this workshop, participants will be able to:

identify performance indicators for the interpersonal/presentational modes;
assess a learner’s performance using the given indicators; and
provide learner feedback to encourage growth.

Presenters:
Karen Nickel is a consultant and coach for World Language and K-12 educators. As an educator for 34 years, she has experience teaching Novice–Advanced German and as a world language curriculum coordinator.
Sarah Strauss is a National Board Certified Teacher in World Languages. She is currently a Spanish teacher at Minnetonka High School as well as an Adjunct Professor at Normandale Community College (MN).

Program Coordinators work as part of a close-knit team to research, design, organize, market, and oversee the successful completion of a diverse program slate each season. Each coordinator has a personal set of programs that are wholly their own, often being responsible for programs that range widely in terms of focus and geographic location. The Fulbright-Hays Seminars Abroad Program (SA) provides U.S. educators in the social sciences and humanities with opportunities to participate in short-term seminars abroad to improve their understanding and knowledge of the peoples and cultures of other countries. In 2021, summer seminars will be offered in Iceland, Morocco, and Mexico.

Each thematic seminar features educational lectures and interactive, cultural activities specifically designed for elementary, secondary, and postsecondary educators, including visits to local schools and organizations and meetings with education administrators, government officials, policymakers, teachers, and students. Participants draw on their experiences during the program to create new or to enhance cross-cultural curricula for use in their U.S. classrooms and school systems.

Sixteen educators participate in each seminar. The SA program covers airfare, room and board, and program costs. Teacher participants are responsible for a cost-share of $650.

Please note that seminar dates could be postponed until the summer of 2022 due to international travel restrictions that may be enacted in response to the current COVID-19 pandemic.

The FY 2021 Seminars Abroad application is now available on the G5 website at www.g5.gov.

If you are a new user, click “Sign Up” on the G5 home page. Once you have successfully registered and your access is activated, click “Package Submission” under Grant Setup. Following the steps provided, complete and upload the required forms and files. See the application package for more detailed instructions.

The application deadline is Dec. 18, 2020.

Eligibility Requirements

Fulbright-Hays Seminars Abroad program applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements:

Be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States.
Hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
Have at least three years of full-time teaching or administrative experience by the departure date from the United States.
Be currently employed full-time in a U.S. school, institution of higher education, local educational agency, state educational agency, library, or museum as a teacher, curriculum developer, librarian, or administrator.
Be an educator in the arts, humanities, or social sciences (this requirement does not apply to administrators).
Employed at the level of the seminar for which you are applying.
Be physically and psychologically fit to participate in the program.

The webinar will provide guidance on how to prepare a competitive application, use the G5 electronic application system, and troubleshoot technical issues.

In order for the webinar to best serve the needs of all applicants, please submit any questions regarding the competition and application in advance to seminarsabroad@ed.gov to ensure that they are addressed during the session.

Drawing on a Fulbright-Hays Seminars Abroad Experience, Professor Encourages Global Citizenship in Clemson Students

Beatrice Bailey, professor of social studies education in Clemson’s College of Education, participated in the 2018 Fulbright-Hays Seminar Abroad Program that focused on exploring contemporary U.S.-Poland relations.

After traveling abroad with the Seminars Abroad program, participants return to their home institutions and share their broadened knowledge and experiences with students and colleagues in the U.S. According to Bailey, the true beneficiaries of her experience abroad were her Clemson students, especially undergraduate students in her “Principles of American Education” course. Bailey stated, “I’m charging each student to design a model K-12 Global Citizenship Education activity for a discipline of their choice and grade level that focuses on U.S.-Poland relations. As future educators, they can help students become ‘world changers’ in any discipline or grade level as they encourage these types of activities.”

During her time in Poland, Bailey met ambassadors and experts on international relations, traveled to see historical sites and modern communities, and took part in discussions and cultural events designed to connect specialists from different academic disciplines. Bailey gained insights into the U.S.-Poland relationship and noted the particular affinity between the two countries and their people. “Before this trip, I couldn’t have imagined the kinds of connections we have and could have with Poland, from the wide variety of multinational corporations and think tanks to the international film industry evolving within Poland’s borders. The trip reinforced my belief in Clemson and our entire nation’s need to focus more fully on education from kindergarten to postgraduate work that emphasizes global citizenship.”

Bailey drew upon her Fulbright-Hays experience to develop a curriculum for her students at Clemson. As part of the curriculum, Bailey required her Clemson education students to write letters to Clemson alumna Nicki Haley, who was serving as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations (U.N.) at the time, to share ideas for ways that K-12 students in Poland and the U.S. could work together to address U.N. development goals. Students posted their U.S.-Poland curricular designs on a blog that current and future teachers could use in their own classrooms. “The ideal student in South Carolina and at Clemson is one who is prepared for global citizenship,” Bailey said. “Through our curriculum simulation and correspondence with U.N. Ambassador Haley, we’re showing how any teacher can begin to design ways to encourage global citizenship within their discipline and grade level.”

Bailey’s experience in the Fulbright-Hays Seminars Abroad program has been personally enriching as well. “I have remained in touch with several colleagues from that experience,” Bailey noted, and described her overall experience in Poland as “terrific.”

Learn to Teach Language Online

A message from our friends at Michigan State University:

As we all look for guidance on transitioning language courses online for summer and possibly the next academic year, I wanted to share a professional development opportunity available through the Center for Language Teaching advancement (CeLTA) and the English Language Center (ELC) at Michigan State University.

Introduction to Online Language Teaching is a fully online, six-week course designed for experienced classroom instructors who want to make the transition to teaching languages online. The course is led by a master instructor with extensive online teaching experience. While each participant will bring their own pedagogical background, the course presupposes a task-based, proficiency-oriented view of language instruction. Course participants will gain an understanding of key criteria and conceptual frameworks used to describe online pedagogy, and will develop expertise in the areas of course quality and design, accessibility, and media. We are offering two sessions of this course this summer:

Summer Session 1: May 18th - June 26th

Summer Session 2: July 6th - August 14th

The online nature of the course exposes participants to all of the affordances and constraints of an online environment for language teaching and learning, allowing them to experience a student’s perspective firsthand. This includes engaging in a variety of tasks and discussions, which are meant to be a non-comprehensive sampling of the possibilities of online learning. Participants will receive feedback from the instructor and, by the end of the course, will have developed a principled plan for developing an online course at their own institution. American Academy of Arts & Science Commission on Language Learning

In support of its recent report, America’s Languages: Investing in Language Education for the 21st Century, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences recently released a call-to-action signed by 37 individuals and over 150 organizations who urge greater support for languages in order to maintain and enhance American global leadership. The report recommends that the U.S. provide access to languages for all age groups, prepare more language teachers, promote public-private partnerships in language education, support heritage and indigenous language communities, and encourage international learning experiences. The American Academy will continue to collect endorsements for “Bridging America’s Language Gap” and will update the document periodically. This spring, four German high school teachers from the Eugene area got together to collaborate and exchange ideas for teaching German. We had a lot of fun sharing the newest Apps related to German language learning and the culture of the German speaking countries. Germany has welcomed many immigrants in the recent past, which sparked a wave of new materials for German as a second language. Many of these materials can be adapted to our classroom teaching, and they provide a great addition to our textbooks. The textbooks and the curricula we use were another topic we discussed. Many of us are working with old textbooks while eagerly waiting for ODE to approve new, 21 st century materials that will match today’s technology. We shared our experiences of using IPads and Chromebooks, along with Google Classroom. We want to thank the Center for Languages and International Collaboration at Pacific University for sponsoring this event. In the World Language departments at our schools we sometimes get lonely, as the only ones teaching German. Sharing materials that are specific to our language was very helpful and enriching.

"On Thursday March 22nd, Jozef Rodríguez Bohórquez (Fulbright Foreign Language Assistant of Spanish at Pacific University), and I, Carolina García Díaz (Fulbright Foreign Language Assistant of Spanish at Lewis & Clark College) took advantage of the fact that both of us were in L.A and decided to meet up to have great Japanese food and talk. We met at the restaurant Daikokuya and we ate some really delicious food while talking about our Language Assistant experience in our respective colleges. We both exchanged tips and ideas to make the learning process in our classrooms fun and didactic. It was a fantastic dinner! "

Thank you so much for the $25 scholarship. It was the perfect opportunity for my colleague, Erica Hergert, and I to get together at Broadway Commons in Salem, Oregon. We are both the only language teacher in our buildings, and don't have enough opportunities to catch up and compare what we're doing in our Spanish classes. Thanks in part to a little late afternoon caffeine and a great atmosphere, we made progress toward aligning our programs according to proficiency standards, and made an assessment for our 8th-graders. Although you can work together in a school, we highly recommend applying for the $50 scholarship from COFLT and doing your work somewhere more fun!

FLIS, the University of Oregon’s annual celebration and exploration of language and culture learning, is Friday, May 4. The day’s events run from 8:30 to 3:00, and will take place in the EMU student union, now a remarkable space for large events. There will be more than 80 presentations by UO faculty, students, and specially invited guests on languages from Arabic to Zulu. FLIS is aimed at high school students, grades 9-12. Every summer, Spanish Studies Abroad offers a course in Seville, Spain called Culture in the Classroom for teachers, or soon-to-be-teachers, of Spanish. This course is specifically designed to develop instructional curriculum in the field of Spanish language pedagogy.

For both veteran teachers of Spanish as a second language, and university students preparing to work as an educator, this course offers a unique professional development experience focused on deepening intercultural knowledge and experiences.

Experiential Learning: Reflective Practice

Culture in the Classroom is a dynamic seminar presenting practical strategies for integrating grammar, reading, writing, speaking and listening into cultural activities. It provides opportunities to observe Spanish language and culture classes being taught at our Seville Center, a historic mansion downtown, and to discuss methodology and strategies with professors in round-table discussions.

Participants keep a journal to record and reflect on a wide array of strategies and tools for integrating cultural themes into their lesson plans. By the end of the course, they will have a portfolio of materials to incorporate into activities and exercises in the classroom.

Cultural Immersion: Host Families

Through living with a host family, participants integrate experience with pedagogy.

Everyday learning is brought into the classroom to expand cultural perception and improve Spanish language instruction.

America's Languages: Investing in Language Education for the 21st Century

In 2014, a bipartisan group of members of Congress asked the American Academy of Arts and Sciences to undertake a new study of the nation’s language education needs. Four members of the United States Senate—Tammy Baldwin (D-Wisconsin), Mark Kirk (R-Illinois), Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), and Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii)—and four members of the House of Representatives—Rush Holt (D-New Jersey), Leonard Lance (R-New Jersey), David Price (D-North Carolina), and Don Young (R-Alaska)—signed two letters requesting that the Academy provide answers to the following questions:

How does language learning influence economic growth, cultural diplomacy, the productivity of future generations, and the fulfillment of all Americans? What actions should the nation take to ensure excellence in all languages as well as international education and research, including how we may more effectively use current resources to advance language attainment?

In response to this request, the Academy created the Commission on Language Learning. The Commission’s final report, America’s Languages: Investing in Language Learning for the 21st Century, offers concrete recommendations to improve access to as many languages as possible, for people of every age, ethnicity, and socioeconomic background.

Support for the Commission was provided by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Henry Luce Foundation, and resources from the Academy’s New Initiatives Fund.

Due to the increased demand we’ve seen this year for ORVED’s online courses, and especially Spanish and French, ORVED is looking for more Foreign Language teachers! ORVED teachers work online, set their own hours, and determine how many students they want to teach (max of 59 students per teacher), to make online learning rigorous and authentic for students throughout Oregon. ORVED works in partnership with schools to provide blended and online learning options for students within their local school and community. ACTFL Unveils New Membership Levels

At its meeting in San Diego, CA in November 2015, the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) Board of Directors approved a proposal to make changes to the way the organization delivers benefits to its members. As a result of this action, on July 1, ACTFL will unveil a new tiered membership structure.

Since its founding in 1967, ACTFL has offered membership based on the career stage of the individual—Regular, New Teacher, Student, Retired. Moving forward, membership categories will be benefit-driven, giving members more control over the benefits they receive and in what format. ACTFL has created some unique membership packages that will allow language educators to choose the benefits that best help them achieve their professional goals, including a BASIC online-only level, a PLUS level that closely mirrors the existing package of benefits, and PREFERRED levels that bundle professional development like ACTFL virtual learning modules, as well as some of ACTFL’s acclaimed publications.

For existing members, nothing will change until the next renewal period. At that time, members will have the ability to choose which new membership level works best for them. As an added convenience, they’ll also be able to pay for their membership in installments and/or set up auto-renewal.

The Center for Global Studies at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, is pleased to announce fellowships and development grants to support the internationalization of community colleges nationwide. We invite applications from faculty, librarians, and administrators interested in expanding global studies curricula, instruction in less commonly taught languages, library collections or international education programs at their home institutions. Fellows will have the opportunity to work one-on-one with international and area studies reference librarians and explore the unlimited print and online resources of the University of Illinois Library.

The 2016 Global and Area Studies Summer Lab is open from July 18 until July 29. Fellowships will cover travel, housing, and parking costs and a research honorarium for select participants. Participants will be eligible to receive subsequent development grants. For more information on awards, eligibility, and instructions to apply, visit our website.

The Center for Global Studies partners with the Russian, East European, and Eurasian Center (REEEC) to promote the internationalization of community college curricula. Follow this link for more information on fellowships and the Summer Research Lab at REEEC. Participants in the two programs will be invited to share their work and establish collaborations in a joint workshop on July 22.

TCLP places teachers from China and Egypt in U.S. host schools for an academic year where they teach Mandarin or Arabic language and culture. Funded by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State and implemented by American Councils for International Education TCLP provides teachers’ salaries, healthcare, roundtrip airfare, training, and ongoing program support.

Founded in 2007, Global Exploration for Educators Organization (GEEO) is a 501c3 non-profit organization that has sent over 1300 teachers abroad on adventurous travel programs. With GEEO educators can earn professional development credits while seeing the world. GEEO's trips are 7 to 21 days in length and are designed and discounted to be interesting and affordable for teachers. In addition to amazing tour leaders, many of the programs are accompanied by university faculty that are experts on the destination. GEEO also provides teachers educational materials and the structure to help them bring their experiences into the classroom. The trips are open to all nationalities of K-12 and university educators, administrators, retired educators, as well as educators’ guests.

Robert Davis, Professor of Spanish at the University of Oregon, is offering Spanish Phonetics, a full 4-credit class, in an intensive one-week format. It’s listed as SPAN 324 (undergrad), but it could be taken SPAN 605 for graduate credit, if in-service teachers need the credits. Description and objectives. In this class, the students will learn basic linguistic tools to analyze the phonetic and phonological systems of Spanish. Topics include the phonetic alphabet, syllabification, and thorough review of Spanish spelling system and accent marks. Students will use these linguistic tools to diagnose and correct possible deficiencies in the pronunciation of Spanish that give the student a non-normative accent. We will also study the range of regional and social accents and dialects of Spanish. This contextualization of phonetics within the geographical and social realities of the Spanish-speaking world make this class a perfect complement to the study of the cultures and literatures that are the core of the humanities-oriented curriculum.

Activities. The objectives above will be reached by

reading and study of linguistic descriptions of Spanish phonetics (textbook)
transcribing spoken and written texts using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA)
recording and evaluating the student’s oral production in Spanish
in-class practice of the sounds of Spanish.

Should Computer Coding Be Offered As A Foreign Language? . Radio | OPB.

Oregon lawmakers are proposing that computer coding be counted towards foreign language requirements for high school students. If HB 2766 passes, high school students will be allowed to take computer coding in lieu of traditional language classes, such as Spanish or French. Proponents of the bill argue (pdf) that coding is an important job skill that students can use anywhere in the world. Opponents say (pdf) that computer coding classes do not have the same cultural value as traditional language classes, which also include material on history and customs. Oregon is not alone in this debate; Texas passed similar legislation last year.
