You will receive the Zoom information prior to the event.

The Institute is a day of learning and reflection for middle school, high school and post-secondary Spanish heritage language educators. Our goal is to connect, discuss, and learn more about practical applications of SHL pedagogy and current research in heritage education.

Institute Mission

As the Spanish heritage learner population continues to grow throughout the state of Oregon, bringing together scholars and practitioners is vital to the implementation of pedagogical interventions that serve their linguistic, socio affective, and educational needs. In order to contribute to meeting this need, the mission of the Oregon Institute on Spanish Heritage Language Education is to facilitate a space wherein pedagogical best practices that focus on linguistic social justice and Spanish language maintenance can be shared and promoted.

This year’s institute aims to create community among educators by building a network of support to promote SHL pedagogy throughout Oregon. In addition, this event also will promote awareness of the pedagogical tools to teach, celebrate, and support U.S. Spanish and its community of speakers within the language classroom.

Keynote Speakers

We are excited to announce that this year’s keynotes speakers will be Dr. María Luisa Parra-Velasco (Harvard University) and Dr. Angélica Amezcua (University of Washington).
